Garrett sat down at the conference table in the administration building located just outside the gates of the Rocky Fork Mine. Being the first to arrive, he let his eyes drift out the large floor to ceiling windows to gaze at the Ozark hills. They were covered with blooming redbud and dogwood trees. Whether it had been the severe winter or the generous spring rains, they appeared more beautiful than in years past. He noted the sway of the jack pines near the tailings pond and remembered the weather forecast predicted another round of severe storms. The blue sky and warm temperatures lulled him into a false sense of security. He felt anxious to be back outside, enjoying the feel of the sun on his neck. Since things at the Bunker mine worked like a smooth-running machine there would be no hurry to rush back after the meeting. Maybe he’d have lunch with the old Rocky Fork crew. Then again, maybe the storms would move in and he’d have to rescue Fawn again.

A sly smile began playing at the corners of his mouth as his thoughts relived the last time. No matter what words came out of her mouth, Garrett knew she still had feelings for him. It was there in the way she touched him and whispered against his mouth before begging him to take her again. The smile and sounds she’d made were all the same as before—before her father had destroyed the love between them. Anger rushed in to erase the warmth of those moments as he remembered what the old man had created to destroy any life they would have together.

By the time the other superintendents arrived, Garrett sat with sullen disregard for their

congratulations on being one of them now. There was some friendly ribbing and off-colored jokes about his sexual exploits but nothing about the unexpected retirement of the man Garrett replaced. His reputation for rolling with the punches had put a slight strain on Garrett’s attitude by the time Big Jim walked into the room and sat his coffee cup on the walnut table.

Their eyes locked as if ready to do combat. The tension between the two men filled the room so that everyone grew silent and pensive. The shuffle of papers in faded file folders made soft sounds against the whistling winds outside. Garrett folded his arms across his chest and leaned back in his leather chair that creaked with his muscular build. He left his folder closed, letting Big Jim know he didn’t need to refer to his notes to address any questions that might come up about Bunker operations.

The knowledge that he would need to be more prepared than anyone else was obvious from their past history. Just because Big Jim bought his silence, it didn’t mean he would make it easy on him. Garrett knew one mistake could land him in the unemployment line or with a reputation for failure so that no other mining company would hire him.
